"Betsy"

Why do people like naming guns "Betsy"? Is it like when I name my giant chin zit "Ned"? To hide its potential for violence and social disruption beneath an unassuming, nonthreatening name?
Behold:
  • The hapless sidekick in BlacKkKlansman (Paul Walter Hauser), who offers neither originality nor aptitude, has a handgun named "Betsy"
  • In The Bold Type (Episode 2x07), Sutton (Meghann Fahy) has a shotgun named "Betsy"
  • Apparently Davy Crockett had three separate rifles that all went by the name of "Betsy" - Ol', Beautiful, Fancy - in honor of his big sister. (Wikipedia, however, does not corroborate this story.)
Or is it more like when I name my car to cover up an irrational attachment to an inanimate object that can be justified via anthropomorphism? Inquiring minds would like to know.
Edit: As my excellent friend on Facebook points out, here is another example!
